How You Don't Play Like Your Kid And Why It Matters

CEPR Policy Insight No. 9

Marco Cipriani, Paola Giuliano, Olivier Jeanne

Intergenerational transmission of economic values has been shown in the literature to be key in understanding the origin and the persistence of several economic outcomes, such as economic growth rates, trade flows and financial development. The extent to which parents are able to transmit their values to their children, and how they do so, remain, however, open questions. The authors of CEPR Policy Insight No.9 use experimental evidence to shed new light on this issue and find a surprising result: parents' attitudes appear to have little effect on their children's dispositions.
